A Prediction Market User Profited $436K on Bets on the Ouster of Maduro.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.
Market Movement in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding former President Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been seized.
A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However the odds had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Emerges
Politicians are growing concerned.
A new rule introduced on recently aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from elections to politics.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
